The 2022 World Cup is over, and the top European competitions are again in full swing! In the Serie A, a real firecracker is on the cards: AC Milan against AS Roma.
The AC Milan – AS Roma match will be a reunion between some of the 2022 World Cup finalists. At AS Roma, we find Paulo Dybala, who became world champion together with Lionel Messi, among others. AC Milan’s team features two Frenchmen eager for revenge: Olivier Giroud and Theo Hernandez. They are still competing for the national title; at AS Roma, on the contrary, they need to connect with the top. When will we see Zlatan Ibrahimovic back at the current champions AC Milan? We take a look at the favourites and let you know how you can bet on AC Milan – AS Roma!
Betting markets AC Milan – AS Roma
Bookmakers generally see home team AC Milan as the absolute top favourite, with odds estimated at around 1.90 on a win. AS Roma are only six points lower, but have to make do with odds of 4.00. A draw between these two legendary clubs stands at 3.65.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic is unfortunately out of action for a few more weeks after his knee surgery in May 2022. AC Milan therefore look to two other strong attackers for goals: the experienced Olivier Giroud, and the 13 years younger Rafael Leão. AS Roma are struggling to score this season, Paulo Dybala is the top scorer with just five goals. In that regard, more should come from Englishman Tammy Abraham, who is only on three goals in 16 games.
Number of goals
AC Milan average one-and-a-half goals per game, while AS Roma only average one goal per game. You could assume it won’t be a goal-fest in this match. For example, you can bet on up to two goals with odds of 1.77. Maximum one goal is even at 3.40.
Somewhat related to the betting market above is the profit margin. That gives higher odds than just filling in the toto of 1X2. AC Milan have odds of 3.50 to win by one goal difference, for AS Roma that stands at 5.50. A win by two goals difference for AC Milan quotes 5.50.
Since the World Cup stop (or winter break), AC Milan have played one league game. Visiting tiny Salernitana, Milan won 2-1, thanks to two quick goals from Rafael Leão and Sandro Tonali. On 30 December, the club also played a friendly against PSV, with of course many substitutions and ‘B players’. Still, the 3-0 defeat against the team from Eindhoven will have left a sour taste for coach Stefano Pioli’s team.
With seven goals in 15 matches, 23-year-old Rafael Leão from Portugal is AC Milan’s most reliable player. 36-year-old Olivier Giroud has scored two goals less, but of course has had a strong World Cup. He had to bow to Lionel Messi’s Argentina, but did score four goals in Qatar. His compatriot Theo Hernandez also had a strong World Cup presence.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic has unfortunately been missing all season at AC Milan due to recovery from knee surgery. Former Ajax defender Sergiño Dest is hoping for more playtime than the seven games he has played this season.
AS Roma also won their first game after the World Cup 2022 Qatar. In typical fashion for this season though, namely with a meagre 1-0 through a goal by Lorenzo Pellegrini. In particular, the sharpness up front will have to improve to make things difficult for AC Milan. What tricks does coach José Mourinho have up his sleeve?
Paulo Dybala, of course, returned as a World Cup winner. On Wednesday night, he was taken off the pitch after 74 minutes, perhaps as a precaution. Another notable player in AS Roma’s squad is Stephan El Shaarawy. From 2011 to 2015, he played for AC Milan. In the 2015/2016 season, Milan loaned him first to AS Monaco and then to AS Roma. That club then bought him over, sold him to China’s Shanghai Shenhua in 2019 and brought him back to Rome in 2021.
Coach José Mourinho of course won the first Conference League with AS Roma, beating Feyenoord in the final. The club management will of course expect more from Mourinho than a place in the sub-top of Serie A. Of course, the Europa League is still coming up, but the club must also qualify for European football next season.
History AC Milan – AS Roma
History & Rivalry
Both clubs are of course legendary, but AC Milan is by far the most successful. The club won 19 national titles, seven times the Champions League or European Cup I and several other prizes such as the UEFA Super Cup five times. AS Roma won only three league titles, the last one in 2001. However, the club did win the Coppa Italia nine times and thus the first Conference League. There is no specific rivalry between the two clubs, but it is Italian football and therefore it’s always at the cutting edge of tension.
It is the first match between the two clubs in the 2022/2023 season. Last season, AC Milan managed to win both encounters: away 2-1 and later at home 3-1. AC Milan are thus six places higher in the league table after 16 matches this season. This is mainly because they score more, 31 against only 19 for AS Roma. AC Milan are still without Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but also without Divock Origi, and goalkeeper Mike Maignan. AS Roma are still missing Georginio Wijnaldum for the time being.
Betting on AC Milan – AS Roma
Of course, there are plenty of options to bet on AC Milan – AS Roma, but what is the best bet to make right now?
I think AC Milan will be the better team, despite missing injured players. Olivier Giroud returns from a strong World Cup and his attacking partner Rafael Leão is really a top player in the making. AS Roma lack some quality and, more importantly, aptitude. It is not the season of Tammy Abraham, who was so strong last season. We predict a narrow AC Milan victory, by either 1-0 or 2-1.

May 7, 2017: AC Milan – AS Roma 1-4
Not long ago, but in truly different times. This was the very last season of club icon Francesco Totti for AS Roma, with him saying goodbye after 25 years. He was on the bench this match, but did see his club win 4-1. Edin Dzeko scored twice, former Milan player Stephan El Shaarawy also scored once. Also in the starting line-up at AS Roma: Mohamed Salah.
26 October 2020: AC Milan – AS Roma 3-3
Just over two years ago, the two clubs met at the San Siro for a wonderful game of football. A fit Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored twice. He could not, however, prevent AS Roma from coming back from a deficit twice as well.
January 6, 2022: AC Milan – AS Roma 3-1
The last meeting between the two clubs dates back to a year ago. The protagonists of that time can play a leading role again. Olivier Giroud was allowed to take a penalty after hands from Tammy Abraham. The Englishman did later score, but eventually lost 3-1 due to, among other things, a goal by Leão for AC Milan. Rick Karsdorp received a red fifteen minutes before time.
