The Bundesliga cannot match the Premier League but it is one of the five major leagues. Particularly entertaining, too. With Bayern Munich, of course, it has a standard-bearer of the absolute top category. The Bundesliga is often mentioned as an ideal stepping stone for top players. We are happy to add: its an ideal league to bet on as well.

The Premier League may be the most awesome, most viewed, most rich, most spectacular competition in the world. Italy might have the competition with the richest history and Spain might have the competition with the best player(s).

The Bundesliga lacks this great appeal. Not the most spectacular, not the greatest players and not the richest history. Secretly, however, the Bundesliga clubs are slowly gaining influence in the European Competitions.

Each season more money, better players and more attention goes to the Bundesliga. Betting on the games is becoming equally more interesting as the promotions from Bundesliga betting grow. Be sure to check out our promotional page on Bundesliga betting.

Small Bundesliga introduction

Due to the history of Germany, there is a lot to say about the history of the Bundesliga. This competition, founded in 1962 and started during the next season, was primarily meant for clubs from Western Germany.

From the season ‘91/92, it became the league as we know today. With the exception that during that year, the competition was played with 20 teams instead of 18. Something that changed (again) in ‘92/93 Not surprisingly, Bayern München is the rekordmeister with their 28 titles, Dortmund and Mönchengladbach are following at a unbridgeable distance of 5 titles each.

The Bundesliga is made up from teams from different regions, so called Oberligas. You have about one Oberliga for each wind direction, with the exception of Oberliga Berlin.

Getting to know the teams

Unlike the Premier League, many teams in the Bundesliga need an introduction. We all know Borussia Dortmund and Bayern München, but the majority of us don’t know many of their ‘smaller’ opponents. Additionally, if you want to place a successful bet, you better know all the in’s and outs. So allow us to give a small introduction of the teams:

Schalke ‘04

FC Schalke ‘04 (in short simply S04) is a professional football club from the neighborhood called Schalke in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. It is still considered one of the top clubs in Germany, though it’s most glorious past has been long gone.

Not many people know this, but Schalke is not just a football club. It hosts many sports, like handball, table tennis and even esports. In total it hosts 158.000 members and is one of the biggest sports associations in the country. There is a large rivalry with Borussia Dortmund and the Kohlenpott Derby is the biggest derby in Germany!

RB Leipzig

RB Leipzig is a recently founded football club from Leipzig, Saksen. RB stands for Red Bull that has injected a vast amount of money into the club. At first, the fans rejected this obscenity. Later, however, they embraced the club as it is the club from the East that can compete with the rich clubs from West Germany. The club is making good appearances, even in the Champions League.

Vfl Wolfsburg

This club was founded right after the war in 1945. Since the season 1997/98 the club plays in the Bundesliga. It has been a steady player ever since. Main sponsor Volkswagen has 100% of the stock shares and is full owner of the club. The ‘Verein für Leibesübungen Wolfsburg’ is not just about football. Like Schalke, the association hosts many other sports like basketball, hockey and volleyball.

1899 Hoffenheim

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim is a german sports association from Hoffenheim. For those who want to visit, you find the town in Baden-Württemberg. The club in the white-blue tenue has been a local sports association that hosts many sports and has long not participated in the bundesliga. In season 2007-2008 the club promoted on the final day. The club has been doing really good ever since!

Bayern Leverkusen

Bayer 04 Leverkusen is thé most well known German football club from Leverkusen, Nordrhein-Westfalen. Like so many other clubs, it started off as a general sports association. April first 1999 (no joke) the football club became independent of the association that started way back in 1904. The team of Bayer promoted to the Bundesliga in 1979 and has been playing in the highest division ever since. The club has had some noticeable successes, also in Europe, but is infamously known as ‘forever second’. Due to losing many finals. The rivalry with FC Köln is one of the biggest in the country!
