History

The first Oktoberfest was held over 200 years ago to celebrate the marriage of Princess Theresa and Crown Prince Louis. Oktoberfest or Bierfest is not just one day of celebration, but spans several weeks. So yeah, if you are going, brace yourself for a monster hangover when it’s over…

Despite the name Oktoberfest, it doesn’t just take place in the month of October. In 2022, for example, it will be celebrated from 17 September to 3 October. The festival ends on the first Sunday of October and lasts two full weeks. This means that people start pouring beer mugs as early as mid-September.

Oktoberfest Traditions

Certain traditions belong to the Oktoberfest, such as music and costumes.

Oktoberfest Costumes

When you say Oktoberfest, you say costumes. The tradition is that men and women dress up in the very recognisable traditional German costumes. The beautiful dirndl dresses for the women, and lederhosen for the men. Perfect for this time of year. And of course, leather trousers can easily take a splash of beer.

Beer

During these weeks of celebration, people traditionally drink Bavarian beer, which comes from the region where Oktoberfest originated. You might think that those big mugs you see in the media contain a nice light beer, but nothing could be further from the truth. This Bavarian beer actually comes with an extra 2% of alcohol. Call it a bonus.

Location

The place to be to celebrate Oktoberfest is the so-called Theresienwiese in Munich, Germany. This meadow bears the name of the bride Theresia, whose wedding party was the reason for the first Oktoberfest in 1810. But it’s not just Munich that is partying these days. Other cities in and outside Germany are also celebrating Oktoberfest. Feel free to check on Google to see if there is a Bierfest near you.

Tents

It is still September/October of course, so the weather can be disappointing. In Munich, several huge tents are set up where it stays dry and cosy warm. And by huge, we do mean huge. The largest tent can accommodate 10,000 people!

Music

You expect folk music at a folk festival. This also applies to the Oktoberfest! Traditionally, there will only be live music here, with the authentic wind players, of course. You’re sure to get in the right mood!

Food

What’s the best thing to eat during an evening of heavy German beer drinking? Exactly, bratwursts. If you are visiting a Bierfest, be sure to expect a sausage on the side. For the vegetarians there are of course also Bratkartoffeln available, the German answer to chips or fries.

More than just a beer festival

As we said before: Oktoberfest is more than just beer. Really! Especially in Munich, the birthplace of this party. Outside the beer gardens and beer tents, there is a fun fair with classic features.

The mayor of the city opens the party with a toast with Bavarian beer. Twelve cannon shots are also fired. There is also a parade for the enthusiasts. There is even a mass in the local church. So there is plenty to see and do!
