One of England and the Premier League’s most historic clubs is Liverpool. With a glorious history that no doubt credits many more unforgettable highlights…. When it comes to betting on Liverpool too, of course.

After 30 mostly lean years, Jurgen Klopp has put ‘The Reds’ back on the map of football greatness. This could be called the golden generation, as it is not a wrong time to be a Liverpool fan. Just as it is also a lucrative time for betting on Liverpool! We are witnessing the birth of legends; with Van Dijk and Salah on the top step of the podium.

History of the club

Betting on Liverpool provides interesting opportunities every week. However, what is the history of The Reds? Where did this football saga begin?

Liverpool FC has a rivalry with Everton FC, also from Liverpool. That rivalry has been there since Liverpool’s inception. In 1892, Liverpool emerged from Everton, founded in 1878. Businessman John Houlding owned Anfield Road and started demanding more and more rent and interest from Everton playing at his ground. Therefore, when Everton finally moved to Goodison Park in 1892, Houlding founded the Liverpool club.

Betting on Liverpool | First successes

In the first season, Liverpool – with only Scottish players – immediately won the Lancashire League and the Liverpool District Cup, against Everton of note. The following season, Liverpool became champions in the Second Division of the Football League. After relegation from the First Division, they won again at the second highest level in 1896. Having also made the FA Cup semi-finals twice, Liverpool won the national title for the first time in 1900-1901. No doubt the bookies of the time saw a run in betting on Liverpool.

Four seasons later, the club would achieve a fantastic performance under coach Tom Watson. The latter had already led Liverpool to the national championship in 1901. In 1904-1905, they won the Second Division again (after an earlier relegation). Then, in 1905-1906, the following season, they became direct national champions after promotion (with another FA Cup semi-final added). Think for a moment what the odds for outright League winner when betting on Liverpool must have been. Indeed, K-ching.

From league titles to grey middle ground

After World War I with four years without football, Liverpool started well again. After two fourth-place finishes, the club won the English league title again in 1922 and 1923. However, they would long prove to be the last successes. After those seasons, Liverpool did not get beyond two fourth-place finishes and mostly the right-row. Back then, betting on Liverpool was a bit like betting on FC Groningen.

Only after World War II was there suddenly another English national championship for the club. In 1946-1947, they kept Manchester United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Stoke City just behind. A temporary success, as seven bad seasons later Liverpool FC were relegated in 1954. It was not until 1962 that the club returned to the top level.

Glorious rise under Bill Shankly

By midway through the 1959-1960 season, Scotsman Bill Shankly had been recruited as coach. He had thus brought the club back to the First Division. The second season after promotion (in 1964), he led Liverpool to their sixth title in history. In 1965, he won the first FA Cup with the club and the national championship again in 1966. During those years, the song ‘You’ll never walk alone’ was also adopted as the anthem at Anfield Road.

Shankly would lead Liverpool to several more successes in the early 1970s in his final years of a total of 15 years as the club’s coach. In 1972-73, he won his third league title with Liverpool, but also picked up his first European success. Under his leadership, Liverpool won the UEFA Cup that year. In his final season, 1973-1974, he won the FA Cup once more. For fans betting on Liverpool, those were great times.

Biggest successes under Bob Paisley

In those 15 years of Shankly, Englishman Bob Paisley had always been assistant coach. A true clubman, as from 1939-1954 he had also been a Liverpool player. In 1974, he reluctantly took over from Shankly. He was to become the club’s most successful coach ever.

In nine years, Paisley won no less than 20 prizes with the club: six league titles, three League Cups, six Charity Shields (supercup), three times the European Cup I (predecessor Champions League), the UEFA Cup (predecessor Europa League) and the UEFA Super Cup. Between 1972 and 1991, Liverpool would fall outside the top-2 of the English league only once. The national title or second place was almost always there. Not the highest odds on Liverpool winning back then, but betting on Liverpool was a pleasant certainty.

Premier League: Liverpool not favoured

In 1992, the Premier League was introduced in England. For a long time, that would spell a curse for Liverpool. For the club would have to wait exactly 30 years for a national championship after 1990. Meanwhile, the club did win several other prizes. A third UEFA Cup in 2001, twice the FA Cup, twice the League Cup and a couple of supercups.

However, the most important success for Liverpool outside the Premier League came in 2005. In a bizarre final against AC Milan, they won the Champions League under coach Rafael Benitez after 3-3 and penalties. With the Mother of All Comebacks, after trailing 3-0. Whoever dared to bet live on Liverpool in the second half undoubtedly has a smile on their face to this day.

Jürgen Klopp: Liverpool wonder coach

Back in October 2015, Jürgen Klopp was appointed Liverpool coach. The club had experienced lean years and was in need of new successes. Klopp had already been very successful at Borussia Dortmund. After a few years of building up, the 2019 prizes came pouring in.

After losing Europa League 2016 and Champions League 2018 finals, Liverpool won the following prizes under Klopp. Champions League 2019, UEFA Super Cup 2019, Club World Cup 2019, finally the Premier League 2020, FA Cup/League Cup/Community Shield in 2022. In short, Klopp knows how to knock other clubs around, and he lifted betting on Liverpool to a whole new level in one fell swoop.

Liverpool club icons

Liverpool FC is known as a people’s club and has also had many club icons in the past. Tom Watson was Liverpool’s coach for 19 years, between 1896 and 1915. Having already led Sunderland to three titles, he also became national champions twice with Liverpool. Key players under Watson included Alex Raisbeck, Sam Raybould, Arthur Goddard and Jack Parkinson.

The next great period of success was started in the 1960s by Bill Shankly, Liverpool coach for 15 years. Then nine years under Shankly’s former assistant Bob Paisley. One of their key players was Ian Callaghan. Between 1960 and 1978, he played 857 games for the club, a record. Roger Hunt was the much-scoring striker on duty between 1958 and 1969. Chris Lawler also experienced many successes between 1960-1975.

Callaghan, like Tommy Smith (1962-1978), won another European Cup I. Players who won three were successful Scotsmen Alan Hansen, Graeme Sounness and Kenny Dalglish (also coach from 1985-1991 and 2011-2012). They also played alongside Ian Rush and Bruce Grobbelaar, who joined the club in the early 1980s. It was said of Ian Rush that if he scored, Liverpool did not lose. Additionely, the man had particularly impressive stats. Extremely useful for in-play betting on Liverpool.

In the second half, the two biggest club icons of the last 25 years would make their debuts. Jamie Carragher reached 737 games between 1996-2013, making him second all-time. Steven Gerrard played 710 games between 1998 and 2015. No one has come close to that in recent years. However, players like Mohamed Salah, James Milner and Virgil van Dijk have become crowd favourites, as has coach Jürgen Klopp.

Retrospective Liverpool season 2021/2022

The 2021/2022 season was a reasonable one for Liverpool. The club did win the FA Cup and League Cup, twice in the final against Chelsea. However, second place in the Premier League behind Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City was already a disappointment. The lost Champions League final against Real Madrid (as in 2017-2018) was, if anything, even more so.

Liverpool season 2022/2023 outlook

Liverpool will obviously be hoping to compete for prizes again this season. They will mainly focus on the Champions League (against Ajax and others) and the Premier League. In that, Manchester City are likely to be the biggest challenger again. Sadio Mané has left for Bayern Munich, but with Darwin Núñez, Liverpool have added a nice young striker. At least when betting on football, you have plenty of options on Liverpool. For example, check out live betting on Liverpool when they play in the Premier League, Champions League or FA Cup!
